Services
Any Floridian with a disability-related issue is eligible to receive Advocacy Center services. Below is a list of what we can help you with, what specific services we provide, and some of the areas we cannot address.
Areas We Cover
The Advocacy Center addresses these areas for persons with disabilities:
- Abuse, neglect or rights violations for persons who live in institutional settings, such as group or nursing homes, state institutions, residential treatment facilities, and others
- Access to publicly funded benefits and services, particularly home and community based services
- Individuals’ rights to be discharged into the community from an institutional placement
- Equal access to public and private programs and services, such as private businesses, transportation, post-secondary education, housing, and others
- State government compliance with Section 508 and the Telecommunications Act
- Access to vocational rehabilitation services
- Access to a free and appropriate public education in the most inclusive environment
- Rights for individuals to gain greater control over important life decisions
- Self-empowerment and control regarding the use of public benefits and personal assets
- Least restrictive alternatives to guardianship
- Access to voting rights and civic participation
Services We Provide
The Advocacy Center provides the following services to persons with disabilities:
- Information and referrals
- Self-advocacy support
- Technical assistance
- Investigations into complaints of abuse, neglect and rights violations in facilities and public programs
- Meaningful and fair dispute resolution support
- Negotiation and mediation support
- Legal advice and representation
In addition to working with individuals, the Advocacy Center also provides:
- Public policy, legislative, and systemic advocacy
- Coalition work on disability rights issues
- Public program and facilities monitoring
- Community education and outreach
Areas We Do Not Cover
- Anything NOT Related to the individual’s disability
- Bankruptcy
- Criminal Law
- Family Law
- Financial Assistance, including:
- Direct cash
- Utility/phone/other bills
- Rental or mortgage assistance
- Property Tax
- Guardianship
- Identity theft
- Landlord/Tenant
- Malpractice
- Mortgage Foreclosures
- Personal Injury
- Probate Law
- Property Law
- Social Security Disability Determination
- Wills
